Energy providers still setting direct debits too high
In a survey carried out by the consumer group, 'Which', energy providers were over-charging 65% of customers on direct debits, despite them being in credit and the survey being in the winter. Normally, energy providers will overcharge during the summer to even-out payments over the winter when use will be higher. Therefore in theory, very few customers should be in siginificant credit during the winter and if they are, their provider should decrease their direct debit payment. 'Which' accused energy providers of using customer money as interest free loans.
The industry regulator, Ofgem, is currently consulting on proposals which should make the whole payment system more transparent ('In the News' on 23 Mar 09).
