Energy providers' management of direct debits is inadequate

Following customer complaints about unexplained increases in direct debit payments (last in 'In the News' yesterday), the energy industry regulator, Ofgem, investigated the UK's six major energy providers.

Ofgem announced today that they have found no evidence of systematic errors or that providers were over-charging. But they did find that their handling of direct debit payments was inadequate. Ofgem has asked providers to improve communication with customers, particularly on when and how they are entitled to refunds. At the moment Ofgem is asking the industry to improve, but it has said that it will look at introducing provision on this as part of the provider's licence if necessary.
