Mobile phone manufacturers commit to universal charger

In a voluntary deal agreed at the European Union today, Europe's leading mobile phone manufacturers - Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Apple, Motorola, Research in Motion and Samsung - have committed to manufacturing a universal phone charger. The charger should be available next year. It is hoped that the new charger will reduce the amount of chargers which have to be thrown away when customers change phones. There are currently 30 different types of charger for different phones throughout Europe.

From July, EU rules come into affect to cap mobile phone roaming charges ('In the News' on 14 May 09).
