Wrexham & Shropshire and Grand Central top popularity poll
According to a survey carried out by the rail passenger watchdog, Passenger Focus, the UK's smallest train operators, Wrexham & Shropshire and Grand Central are by far the most popular with passengers. Passengers like the fact that they can buy cheap tickets on the train on the day and that the ticket pricing system is simple. 97% of Wrexham & Shropshire passengers were satisfied with the service and 94% for Grand Central.
The larger companies who still charge a lot more for tickets on the day, such as Virgin and National Express, came off worse with 81% of passengers satisfied. Other issues were problems with how the companies dealt with delays and toilet facilities.
In March Wrexham & Shropshire became the first UK train company to introduce a flat ticket price for trains to London ('In the News' on 26 Mar 09). Today the government announced that it was taking National Express' East Coast Mainline route into public ownership ('In the News' on 1 Jul 09).
