Birmingham considering trademarking the Balti

Birmingham's city council is considering applying to the EU to get protected status for Balti currys served in Birmingham, in the same way that the Champagne name can only be used for sparkling wine from that region of France or Wensleydale cheese can only come from Wensleydale in Yorkshire. If successful, curry houses outside the "Balti Triangle" in Birmingham, where they are said to have originated, will not be able serve currys using the Balti name.
