Online grocery shopping set to double over next 5 years
Online sales of groceries are expected to double over the next 5 years, according to a report by the grocery market research organisation, IGD. Consumers are predicted to spend approximately £5 billion per year on online food shopping by 2012. This would represent just over 3% of the total groceries market in the UK which is predicted to increase to £156 billion per year over the same period.
Online food retailers such as Ocado and Tesco Direct believe that these figures are conservative, predicting that advances in technology and changes in consumer habits will speed up adoption of online grocery shopping. Tesco has also revealed that it plans to increase online sales by opening a number of 'online-only' stores throughout the country - effectively regional hubs used for delivering groceries that were ordered online.
