In the News - Roaming Charges
Government and mobile phone operators 'conspired' against consumers
The Government appears to have conspired with mobile phone operators to resist caps on roaming charges recently imposed by the EU, according to documents disclosed to the Times Newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act. A series of emails between Government negotiators and representatives of Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange and BT in 2006 reveal the Government apparently lobbying against the price caps on behalf of mobile phone operators.
The disclosures have outraged conusmer groups who have accused the Government of putting the interests of mobile phone operators ahead of consumers.
The caps were brought in last month under the so-called 'Eurotariff' (covered in 'In the News' on 1 October 2007). Roaming charges will be capped at approximately 34p per minute (depending on the Euro exchange rate) for outgoing calls and 17p for incoming ones.
