MPs' expenses bill rises to £87.6 million
The amount of expenses claimed by MPs (on top of their salaries) has risen by 5% since last year. MPs have claimed a total of £87.6 million this year, with the average amount claimed by each MP being £136,000. Several MPs have come in for particular criticism: the couple, Ed Balls and Yvette Cooper, have together spent more than £300,000, including £32,000 to fund their second home in London.
The year's most expensive MP was Shaid Malik, Labour MP for Dewsbury, who claimed £185,000. Mr Malik claimed that the money allowed him to 'provide a better service to constituents' with most of the money being spend on his office and admin costs.
