Tesco wins 11 year planning permission battle.
Twelve councillors are due to vote today on a planning application for a Tesco store in Sheringham in Norfolk. This comes after an 11 year battle by the town’s residents against the application. The Sheringham Chamber of Commerce have calculated that more than 10% of local businesses will close within 12 months of opening the new store. This comes after the Competition Commission published its provisional report into the UK grocery market this week (In the News 31 October), which stated that more supermarkets are needed to increase competition. Tesco has also recently been In the News (30 October 2007) for a successful planning application at Manningtree, where local residents at the UK’s smallest town share the same concerns as the Sheringham residents.
