In the News - Online shopping

Mega Monday

Today has been nicked named 'Mega Monday' as it is the day that shoppers turn to the internet for their Christmas shopping. Online shopping is becoming so important to retailers that Mega Monday is said to be replacing the last Saturday before Christmas as the most important day for gift shopping. Online sales are expected to reach more than £5 billion from now to 25 December. This is 50% more than last year as consumers chose to avoid crowds and queues with the ease of ordering online.

Today Play.com expect to take 650 orders a minute and move 250 tonnes of goods. Many retailers have improved their websites and ordering processes to cope with the demand. Some including Amazon and Boots have taken on more staff.

Mega Monday arises because consumers tend to order items three weeks before Christmas to guarantee delivery. Delivery systems have improved making it less necessary for consumers to order so far in advance. For example Amazon are promising same day delivery before 8.30 am on Christmas Eve to London and Birmingham and delivery companies such as DHL Express and the Royal Mail are increasing capacity. However consumers are still fearful of items failing to arrive before Christmas, with 500,000 failing to do so last year.
