nPower to raise tracker tariff prices

Energy company nPower is expected to announce New Year price increases for customers on its tracker tarriff in response to recent increases in wholesale energy costs. On 1 January 2008, the gas tariff is expected to rise by 17% and electricity by 13%.

The move had been predicted for several weeks (as covered in 'In the News' on 3 December) and comes shortly after British Gas announced increases in its tracker tariffs. Centrica (which owns British Gas) has also warned of a difficult year ahead for energy companies. This has prompted fears that other suppliers such as EDF and E.ON (formerly Powergen) may follow suit.
