Taxpayers in limbo after HMRC website crashes

HM Revenue & Customs' website was brought down yesterday after hundreds of thousands of tax payers attempted (unsuccessfully) to file their tax returns before the midnight deadline. Failure to file a return and pay the correct amount of tax by 31 January would normally result in an automatic fine of £100 plus interest. However, in light of the crash HMRC has extended the deadline to midnight tonight.

It is not known precisely what caused the website to go down but it being seen as the latest in a long line of IT failures that have dogged the Government.
