Play.com launches music download service

Today Play.com will launch its digital download service in a bid to take on the dominant Apple iTunes. Play.com's downloads will be 14p cheaper than iTunes and will be free of Digital Rights Management (DRM) software. DRM software restricts the transferability of downloads onto CD's and other MP3 devices. For example music downloaded from iTunes can only listened to on an Apple iPod. Play.com has signed up EMI and several independent retailers on DRM free deals. The company is currently in talks with Sony BMG, Universal and Warner Music. It's closest rival Amazon has already signed up the big four record companies on DRM free deals in the US, however Amazon have yet to launch its service in the UK.
