British Gas broke into EDF customers' flat to fit own meter
Questions are being asked after energy company British Gas broke into the home of customers of rival EDF Energy while the customers (a couple from Willesden Green, London) were on holiday and installed a British Gas pay-as-you-use meter. British Gas is said to have thought that the couple were its customers and so, because they were not paying any bills, picked the locks of their flat and fitted the meter, a step which under the Gas Act, British Gas is entitled to do. British Gas has since acknowledged that it had made a billing error and paid the couple £200 in compensation.
