Cash-paying telephone customers pay extra £237 million p/a
Telephone customers who pay by cash or cheque are losing up to £237 million a year, according to a report by price comparision website USwitch.com. BT, Virgin Media and Talk Talk are among telecoms providers that charge customers more if they want to pay by cash or cheque as opposed to by direct debit and if they require a printed bill. BT is believed to charge £33 a year more per customer, while Virgin Media charges an extra £60.
BT claims that the 'discount' given to direct debit customers is to reward them for being environmentally-friendly in not requiring a printed bill. However, campaigners for the elderly in particular say that there are large sections of the public who do not have access to the internet and so are being penalised unfairly.
The USwitch report follows similar revalations about energy customers paying up to £210 per year more if they pay by cheque, reported in 'In the News' on 8 February 2008.
