Pressure for energy companies to back fuel poverty scheme
The Government is putting pressure on the UK's largest energy companies to subsidise a new nationwide fuel poverty scheme. If the energy companies don't back such a scheme, the government is threatening a new windfall tax on profits. Such a scheme is aimed at supporting the 4.5 million people thought to be in fuel poverty. Last week the Government met Scottish & Southern Energy and NPower. This week the Government will meet Centrica (owner of British Gas), Scottish Power, E.ON and EDF Energy.
The new comes after price hikes from energy companies (reported 'In the News' 21 January 2008) and British Gas being criticised for its significant profit increase (reported 'In the News' 21 February 2008).
