MPs vote to close 2,500 post offices
Last night the Conservative Party and Liberal Democrats lost an MP vote to stop the closure of 2,500 post offices. A total of 556 MP's voted and the Government won by 20 votes. The defeat clears the way for the Post Office closures, a move which is expected to put strain on local shops and affect local communities (as reported 'In the News' on 17 March).
The Post Office is thought to lose £500,000 a day and there are 800 post offices with an average of 16 customers attending each week.
