Scottish and Southern raises energy prices early
The UK's second largest energy company, Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE), yesterday became the last of the 'Big Six' energy companies to raise its prices despite promising consumers that it would not do so until the end of March. SSE, which has increased its prices an average of 14.2% for electricity and 15.8% for gas - way above the rate of inflation, apologised but said that pressures in the wholesale market meant that it had to raise prices early. Consumer groups say that the rises will bring the average domsetic energy bill to over £1,000.
The move follows similar price increases from SSE's rivals, nPower, British Gas, EDF Energy, Scottish Power and E.ON (formerly Powergen), earlier in the year (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 7 February 2008).
