Misleading figures on train punctuality published
Network Rail figures on train punctuality show that official figures released by the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) are highly misleading. The ORR figures show that 90% of trains are running on time. However the ORR allows train companies operating long distance services to record a train as arriving on time if it arrived with 9 minutes and 59 seconds of its recorded time. For short distance services the margin is 4 minutes 59 seconds. Network Rail has carried out an experiment with South West Trains by recording every delay. It shows that under the ORR measure 93.5% of South West Trains were on time, however only 71.6% arrived at exactly the right time.
