Government failing to tackle fuel poverty

The Government is failing to solve the problem of fuel poverty which now affects around 4.5m homes nationally, according to an annual report released today by the Fuel Poverty Action Group. It accuses the Government of having 'given up trying to hit its legally binding target' to reduce fuel poverty. Fuel poverty is now at its highest since Labour came to power, with around 2.3 million homes in the UK spending more that 10% of their income on gas and electricity.

The report comes as the Government is reportedly putting pressure on the UK's 'Big Six' energy companies - nPower, British Gas, Scottish & Southern Energy, Scottish Power, E.ON and EDF Energy - to subsidise a new nationwide fuel poverty scheme (reported in 'In the News' on 3 March 2008).
