In the News - Alitalia

Air France/KLM acquisition of Alitalia falls through

The acquisition of Alitalia by Air France/KLM has fallen through. First reported 'In the News' on 17 March, Air France/KLM were due to buy Alitalia for £107 million. Talks broke down between the two airlines because of political pressure by unions over Air France/KLM's plans to cut 2,100 jobs at Alitalia. The Italian government own 49.9% of Alitalia and the sale of the airline has become a politically sensitive matter in the run up to the general election. To keep flying past June, Alitalia needs a cash injection.
