BT accused of secretly spying on broadband customers
Only a week after fears were raised about the privacy implications of advertising service, Phorm, which monitors broadband users' internet usage in order to target relevant advertising at them (reported in 'In the News' on 27 March 2008), telecoms company, BT, has been accused of spying on the browsing habits of its broadband customers without their permission. Around 30,000 broadband users are thought to have been affected between 2006 and 2007 when BT was secretly trialling the Phorm service.
The Information Commissioner is said to be looking at whether BT is in breach of data protection law.
