Four village pubs close a day
According to figures by the British Beer and Pub Association, village pubs are closing at a rate of four a day. Last year 1,409 pubs closed. This was nearly seven times more than the previous year. Pub closures have been caused by declining beer sales and increasing energy and wholesale costs. Approximately 30 million pints of beer are consumed each day in pubs. This is the lowest level since the 1930's. The recent fall in beer sales have been caused by rising alcohol duty (see 'Budget Summary 2008' for the latest increase), the smoking ban and competition from supermarkets.
