Thames Water fined £9.7m for poor service and false data

Water company, Thames Water, is to be fined nearly £10 million for misreporting figures and poor customer service by its industry regulator, Ofwat. This follows a similar but much larger fine imposed by Ofwat on another water company, Severn Trent, 10 days ago (reported in 'In the News' on 8 April 2008) which resulted in Severn Trent having to pay £35.8 million.

In Thames Water's case, Ofwat reduced its original £12.5 million fine as it said it had no evidence that Thames Water's wrong figures were deliberate.

Neither company will be allowed to pass their fines on to consumers by way of price increases.
