Rail fare shake-up to create winners and losers

Train companies are to simplify their ticket-pricing in what is being called the largest shake-up of rail travel since privatisation. The move, which will see an end to the Cheap-day Return, SuperSaver and Apex tickets along with around 70 other fare-types, has been broadly welcomed by consumer groups.

However, there are fears that particularly passengers who plan their journeys in advance could get a worse deal as train companies, such as First Great Western, Virgin, East Midlands Trains and TransPennine Express, are also to stop giving refunds for advance tickets and to double their fees for changing journey times.
