OFT announce another supermarket price-fixing enquiry

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has today announced a further investigation into supermarket price-fixing, this time in relation to tobacco products. Eleven retail chains, including Asda, Sainsbury's, Shell, Somerfield, Tesco, First Quench, Morrisons and the Co-operative Group, have been named by the OFT has being investigated over allegations that they colluded with tobacco manufacturers, Gallaher and Imperial Tobacco, over the prices of tobacco products sold in stores.

The news comes only 2 days after the OFT announced that it would pay supermarket chain Morrisons £100,000 in compensation following a number of false allegations made during a separate OFT investigation into dairy products (reported in 'In the News' on 23 April 2008).
