Royal Mail Saturday deliveries under threat
Regulator of the Royal Mail (Postcomm), have warned that Saturday deliveries could be threatened unless the Royal Mail is partly privatised. Saturday deliveries cost the Royal Mail £270 million a year. Scrapping the deliveries would help Royal Mail's severe financial difficulties. Also threatened is the "universal service", this is where every address in the country receives letters for the same price. The 350 year Royal Mail monopoly ended in 2006 when other companies were allowed to deliver mail. However a recent report commissioned by the government said that there was no evidence that this had helped smaller businesses or consumers (reported 'In the News' 7 May).
