Ofwat propose break-up of regional water monopolies

Ofwat, the water regulator, will today announce proposals to open up the market to competition. Water providers currently have regional monopolies preventing consumers from switching. In the last five years water bills have risen on average 24%. Ofwat want to open up the water market to allow households to pick from any supplier the same way they currently do with gas and electricity. Both Thames Water and Severn Trent have recently been 'In the News' (18 April and 8 April respectively) for receiving fines for poor service and false data. Ofwat's proposals will be submitted to an independent government review on competition.
