Chancellor summons supermarkets to discuss food prices

The Chancellor has summoned executives from leading supermarkets, including Tesco and Asda, the National Farmers Union and the British Retail Consortium to Downing Street today to discuss the effect food prices are having on the UK economy. This follows figures recently released by the Office of National Statistics showing the highest ever increase in food prices (reported 'In the News' 14 May). Food producers warn that there may be further price rises, depending on the success of the harvest.
