In the News - Strikes
Passengers should be spared a summer of strikes
Rail and airline passengers should be spared a summer of strikes. Members of the RMT Union voted against a national strike, which would have caused three quarters of UK train journeys to be cancelled. However this excludes 12,000 Network Rail maintenance workers who have voted to go on strike over pay. Network Rail say this is unlikely to have a detrimental effect on services and call for the union to enter into discussions. However this follows a disruptive year so far, with problems over New Year, Easter and the first May bank holiday (reported 'In the News' 2 January, 10 March and 29 April respectively).
Meanwhile the British Airline's Pilots Association (Balpa) is no longer pursuing its High Court claim to take industrial action at British Airways (BA). The dispute between the Balpa and BA concerns the launch of BA's subsidiary airline OpenSkies (reported 'In the News' 10 January) as a threat to BA pilots' pay and working conditions. Although no longer planning a strike Balpa say they are considering other forms of protest.
