Broadband speeds slower in rural areas
Research conducted by Thinkbroadband.com for the BBC shows that broadband is faster in towns than rural areas. The survey of 6,000 locations across the UK found that the average broadband speed was 4.5 megabits per second (Mps) in London compared to 2.9 Mps in Scotland, 2.6 Mps in Wales and 2.3 Mps in Northern Ireland, with a national average of 3.2 Mps. Many urban areas have fibre-optic cable which is faster than the cooper lines found in many rural areas. With a lower population density in rural areas it often makes the installation of faster fibre-optic cables uneconomic.
