Mobile phone companies threaten charges to receive calls
The European Commission has pledged to reduce the amounts that mobile phone operators can charge for connecting calls to each others' networks - so-called 'termination charges' - a move which could spell a dramatic reduction in consumers' mobile phone bills. However, larger mobile networks have warned that, if termination charges are scrapped, they may charge mobile phone users for receiving calls as well as making them in order to make up for lost profits, a practice that is common in the US.
The news comes after mobile operator, 3 mobile, earlier this year urged the UK's Competition Commission to take action against termination charges (reported in 'In the News' on 19 March 2008).
Last year the European Commission introduced limits on the roaming charges that could be charged by mobile companies (reported in 'In the News' on 1 October 2007).
