Barclaycard facing fine for silent calls
Barclaycard, the UK's largest credit card provider, may be fined by the telecoms watchdog, Ofcom, for persistently making silent telephone calls to people's homes. Silent calls, which can be anything from annoying to intimidating to those that receive them, occur when the automated systems used in call centres dial more numbers than operatives can deal with, leaving silence when the home-owner answers the call.
Ofcom can fine companies up to £50,000 for making an excessive number of abandoned calls. In March this year, high street bank Abbey was fined £30,000 for making too many silent calls. In January 2007, Carphone Warehouse was fined £35,000.
