30 local radio stations fined £1.1m for false phone-in competition
Nationwide radio operator, GCap Media, has been fined £1.1 million by Ofcom for manipulating premium rate phone in competitions. The Ofcom investigation found that instead of airing correct answers the GCap radio stations aired incorrect answers to prolong the competition. The competition concerned was called Secret Sound and ran between 15 January and 8 February on 30 local radio stations across the country. According to Ofcom, Secret Sound received 297,215 entrants generating £104,536 revenue. GCap says it will offer entrants refunds, however to date details of how to do this have not been published. GCap own stations including Classic FM, London's Capital 95.8 and Birmingham's BRMB.
