Mobile phone companies threaten end to free handsets

Mobile phone companies have warned that they could soon have to stop offering customers free handsets if plans by the EU to limit 'termination charges' - amounts charged to mobile phone users for calls to other networks - come into force. The news follows a similar warning from phone companies last week that they may also have to charge for users to receive calls as well as make them (reported in 'In the News' on 17 June 2008).

Termination charges, which are said to make up around 20% of mobile phone companies' revenues, have come under scrutiny from the EU following complaints by network operator 3 Mobile (reported in 'In the News' on 19 March 2008).
