Halifax criticised for new £245 mortgage fee

Halifax, the UK's mortgage lender, has been criticised for introducing a new £245 mortgage fee, to be added to a Halifax mortgage at the time the home-owner buys their house.

Halifax claims that the new fee is simpler as it lumps together different fees paid throughout the life of the mortgage and comes to a lesser amount. However, as some commentators have pointed out, some mortgage-holders often do not have to pay all of the different fees, making the new, front-loaded fee much more expensive.
