eBay to pay £31.5m to luxury brands for fakes on site

Auction website eBay has been ordered by a court in France to pay €40 million (£31.5 million) to the designer goods group that owns Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Kenzo and Guerlain for allowing fake bags, lipsticks and designer clothes to be sold on the site. The decision may open the floodgates to similar claims against eBay from other designer brands. Last year designer jeweller Tiffany & Co accused auction website eBay of being a 'rat's nest' of fake jewellery such as watches, bracelets and necklaces (reported in 'In the News' on 12 December 2007).
