Tesco appeals new supermarket test intended to up competition
Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket, is to launch an appeal against the findings of the recent report into the supermarket sector by the Competition Commission. The report, which was reported in 'In the News' on 30 April 2008, recommended changes to the planning system to allow more supermarkets to be built within local areas to help increase competition.
However, Tesco believes that a new planning test proposed by the Commission, based on the number of the retailer's own stores and rival supermarkets within a 10-minute drive, would present an extra layer of bureaucracy, potentially making the planning process harder and therefore restricting competition further.
