British Gas expected to raise prices by 15% again

Energy company British Gas is expected to announce yet another round of gas price increases after a threefold increase in the wholesale price of gas in the past year. British Gas could raise its prices by as much as 15% in a matter of weeks. The price rises could affect all its 16 million customers.

The other members of Britain's 'Big Six' energy companies - E.ON, EDF Energy, Scottish Power, N-Power and Scottish and Southern Energy - are facing similar pressures and could follow suit in the next few months.

The news follows the Government attempting to put pressure on the UK's energy companies to help tackle fuel poverty, thought to affect around 4.5 million people (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 3 March 2008).

British Gas was also criticised earlier this year for a huge jump in profits which were not passed on to consumers (also reported in 'In the News' on 3 March 2008)
