Airline passengers to be scanned for illegal downloads

Airline passengers could soon have their iPods, mobile phones and laptops scanned by customs officials looking for illegal downloads under tough new anti-piracy proposals being considered by the G8 this week. The proposals are part of an agreement aimed at stamping out worldwide piracy but there are fears that individuals who have illegally downloaded songs or video clips for personal use could also be caught out.

The news follows a series of letters written last week to internet-users suspected of internet piracy by Virgin Media and the British Phonographic Industry (reported in 'In the News' on 4 July 2008).
