BSkyB demanded payment for 'free' digital set-top boxes

TV company BSkyB has been accused of exploiting vulnerable viewers after it mistakenly sent letters demanding payment to recipients of free digital set-top boxes under a scheme designed to help the elderly and vulnerable make the switch from analogue TV. The scheme, which is administered by the BBC at a cost of £603 millions of licence fee payers' money, means that those over 75 and the disabled are entitled to a have a set-top box installed for a one-off fee of £40. Those on benefits receive it free.

BSkyB has apologised for the mistake and contacted nearly all of the people who received the demand letters.
