BSkyB announces iTunes rival music download service
Digital TV company BSkyB has announced a ground-breaking tie-up with the world's biggest record label, Universal, to launch a music download service that could compete with Apple's iTunes. The service, which is as yet unnamed but is scheduled for launch this year, will provide an unlimited on-demand jukebox service together with a set number of tracks that users can download and save, all for a single monthly charge.
It is thought that similar deals between BSkyB and other record labels are in the pipeline.
Online retailer Amazon is also planning to launch a download service in the UK this year.
