Parents to be punished for children's illegal downloads

Thousands of parents could be punished if their children download music and films illegally via the internet under anti-piracy measures to be announced by the Government today. The measures, which could involve parents being blacklisted and having their internet access restricted, are the first of their kind in the world.

About 6.5 million Britons are thought to have downloaded music illegally last year. Illegal downloads are likely to cost the music industry alone £1 billion over the next five years.

The big six broadband providers - BT, Virgin Media, Orange, Tiscali, BSkyB, and Carphone Warehouse - have all signed up to the Government's scheme to combat online piracy.
