Social networks failing to protect underage access

Social networks are not doing enough to protect children, according to a new survey out day. The survey estimates that around 750,000 children may be illicitly using social networks despite these being supposedly limited to teenagers and adults. It is feared that children could be exposed to potentially risky communication with strangers. Facebook and Bebo set a minimum age limit of 13 for users and Myspace sets the limit at 14.

The news comes several months after a similar survey by telecoms regulator Ofcom (reported in 'In the News' on 2 April 2008) which also accused social networking sites of not doing enough to protect pre-teen users.
