Virgin Media to offer 200Mb broadband by 2012
Internet service provider (ISP) Virgin Media could be able to provide broadband at speeds up to 200Mb per second by 2012, around 40 times faster than the average speed currently enjoyed by British web surfers. The news follows rival BT's announcement that it plans to spend £1.5bn on improving its own broadband network (reported in 'In the News' on 15 July 2008). However, BT's upgrades would only result in half the speeds offered by Virgin Media in time for the London Olympics.
Virgin Media has lost a total of 19,500 customers over the three months to end June.
