Airlines to cut down catering to reduce fuel costs
Airlines are reportedly looking at drastic measures to reduce the impact of high oil prices on their profits. British Airways is reducing the weight of passenger meals, issuing new lightweight catering trolleys, reducing the amount of water it carries on-board and even scrapping cabin crew paperwork. Virgin Atlantic is cutting down on packaging and wants to develop a package-less meal. Other airlines have slimmed down their cutlery and resorted to lighter porcelain plates for their first-class passengers.
On a typical flight, catering equipment and food can weigh around six tonnes.
