British Airways seeks transatlantic tie-up
The UK's largest airline, British Airways (BA), yesterday announced plans for a transatlantic tie-up between it, American Airlines (AA) and Spanish airline, Iberia. The move, which some commentators predict could pave the way for a 'super-carrier' airline, would see an end to competition between BA, AA and Iberian on highly lucrative transatlantic routes and would allow the airlines to coordinate their timetables and share revenues.
The three airlines are seeking the go-ahead from US and EU competition authorities. However, fears have been expressed from elsewhere in the airline industry, particularly Virgin Atlantic's Richard Branson, that the move would create a 'monstor monopoly' that would squeeze out competition by other airlines.
