New front opens in supermarket price war
The supermarket price war being waged this summer (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 12 August 2008) has opened up a new front with supermarkets offering price cuts on a large range of goods. Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket, announced that it is discounting one in four products across its range of 70,000 goods.
The UK's second largest supermarket, Asda, responded by launching a 25p pint of milk, a 50p loaf of bread and other eye-catching promotions. Morrisons is also to start selling the ingredients for a substantial breakfast for just £4.
Discount chain Aldi and supermarket Sainsbury's are also thought to be considering price cuts.
