Asda slashes pay-as-you-go mobile tarriffs
Yet another front in the summer supermarket price war (reported most recently in 'In the News' on 15 August 2008) has opened after Asda, the UK's second largest supermarket chain, announced plans yesterday to cut charges on its pay-as-you mobile tariffs. From 1 September, flat-rate calls will be cut from 16p to 8p and the price of text messages from 5p to 4p. Asda, which uses Vodafone's network and has around 150,000 customers, now claims to be the best value pay-as-you-go mobile provider.
However, Tesco Mobile, which uses O2's network and boasts 1.5 million customers, also claims this title - it charges 20p a minute for calls and 10p for texts but customers can make half-price calls to their favourite five numbers, which account for about 80 per cent of calls made by the average mobile user.
Asda's move comes after Vodafone, O2 and T Mobile in the last few months have all announced price increases on their pay-as-you go packages (reported in 'In the News' on 19 August 2008).
