The main cost is likely to be digging up roads in order to lay new super-fast fibre-optic cable. Telecoms group BT has said that it plans to spend £1.5bn on improving its own broadband infrastructure (reported in 'In the News' on 15 July 2008). Broadband company Virgin Media has also promised faster speeds with broadband at up to double those planned by BT (reported in 'In the News on 8 August 2008).
